The Common Ground Join

L-board · Experiment

What does earthful making change in a day?

An open learning board. Not a case study with the ending written first.

Question, place, people, attempt, result, lesson, and something another person can try.

Field photograph. It illustrates the area of the question. It is not evidence that the experiment succeeded.
Question
What changes when everyday making starts from soil, fibre and what is already here, instead of from a material ordered in?
Place
Common Ground workshops and gatherings.
People
Makers, visitors, and whoever is teaching the craft that day.
What we tried
Earthful crafts. A word the movement uses for making that stays close to earth and to reuse. Textile work, material already in the room, hands rather than a new kit.
What happened
Workshops and gatherings have included this kind of making. The photographs show process: cloth, quilts, people at the work. Outcomes differ by session. A workshop is not treated here as proof of a lifestyle.
What we learned
The useful habit so far is the pause before a material is called sustainable. Earthful is a question. It is not a label you can buy.
What others can try
Take one object you were about to buy for a workshop. Ask whether a material already in the place can do the job. Write down the compromise. The compromise is the lesson.

If you try a version of this, the useful reply is what happened, including the failure. Send it when you write. We would rather extend the board than collect praise.
