What we explore

Art and craft

Art, craft and storytelling as ways of connecting people and keeping living knowledge in use.

A woman sitting on a patchwork quilt, hand-working a piece of bright cloth.
Textile work from Common Ground's photographs. Hands making, not a finished product shot.

Art and craft, here, are not a soft extra beside the serious work. They are one of the ways knowledge stays alive. A stitch, a song, a wall pattern, a tool shape. If it is only written down, it is already halfway to a museum.

Earthful crafts are part of the workshop line. Earthful, in the movement's language, means making that starts from soil, fibre and what is already here, and asks what a thing costs the earth before it is called sustainable.

The photographs show work in progress. Cloth on a floor. A quilt still being assembled. That is the right temperature for this site. Finished objects are easy to admire and hard to learn from.

Craft is also how a visitor can enter without pretending to be a farmer or a builder. One afternoon of making is a legitimate door into the movement.

In practice

  • Earthful crafts in workshops
  • Process shown, not only the finished object
  • Storytelling as a record, alongside field notes
  • Making offered as a way in, not a souvenir stall
