The Common Ground Join

L-board · Experiment

Can a small forest feed a place?

An open learning board. Not a case study with the ending written first.

Question, place, people, attempt, result, lesson, and something another person can try.

Question
Can an integrated food forest, on a few acres, move a place toward food sovereignty without becoming a show garden?
Place
Dhaanyam, Attappadi, Kerala
People
The Common Ground team, and the people growing, cooking and learning on the land.
What we tried
A mixed system: many plant varieties together, aquaculture in the same cycle, and waste returned to the system instead of exported as a problem. About five acres. More than 170 varieties is the scale currently described.
What happened
The system is in use. This page does not turn that into a yield, a carbon figure, or a success. Those numbers are not confirmed here. What is confirmed is that the attempt is real, and that it is still a learning board.
What we learned
Integration is slower to explain than a single crop, and harder to fake. A visitor can see variety. They cannot see the failures unless someone writes them down. That writing is still the open task.
What others can try
Start smaller than five acres. Pick one waste stream on a farm or in a kitchen and ask where it could feed something else. Write the result after a season, including what did not take.

If you try a version of this, the useful reply is what happened, including the failure. Send it when you write. We would rather extend the board than collect praise.
